When you have been close to the architecture, the models, and the decisions behind a system, recognition feels different. You do not just see the outcome — you understand what it took to make it work.

This week, Flock Energy's climate-tech work was recognised with the Climate Redesign Award at Delhi Climate Innovation Week 2026. I've been thinking about what it felt like to receive it — and why it does not feel the way an outsider might expect an award to feel.

The title of this piece is the honest version. Awards are lagging indicators of what you have already shipped. By the time the certificate lands in your hand, the bet you made two years ago — the architecture decision, the model you trained, the weekend you spent re-flashing firmware — has already either worked or not. The award is the report card, long after the test.

Recognition from the inside.

From the inside, recognition reads differently. I don't see a stage; I see the specific architectural call that made Flock Connect's digital twin actually useful to a DISCOM. I see the night we threw out a model that looked good on validation but fell over on real meter data. I see the moment a utility engineer trusted our anomaly signal enough to dispatch on it.

From the outside, it looks like a clean narrative: team does great work → team gets recognised. From the inside it is a memory of a hundred messier decisions, most of which could have gone the other way.

What awards are actually.

Awards are useful. They signal to the market that this team is not a random bet. They give customers air cover for placing an order with a young climate-tech company. They attract hires. They compound the next year's work.

But they are not the work. The work is the seam between a poorly-documented API and a sensor on a pole in Haryana. The work is a schema migration that did not go down at 2am. The work is a tuned threshold that stopped crying wolf.

The award says you did something. The work says what you actually did.
